Research Scientist

This is a Full-time position in Milwaukie, OR posted May 9, 2021.

Position Summary: Under the direction of the Senior Technology Director, the Research Scientist I will work independently and with other department’s team members to accomplish the goals of the R&D Department and MLI. This position directs and partners with R&D team members for the innovation of new products and applications for existing products for current and potential customers. The Research Scientist I will demonstrate professional appearance, behavior and attitude at all times while performing his/her job duties.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions):

  • Follow safety procedures and regulations.
  • Follow written procedures for laboratory experiments and analysis.
  • Interact well within the group/department.
  • Interact well with other groups/departments as needed.
  • Critically evaluate procedures and identify potential issues/inconsistencies.
  • Assist in resolving issues in procedures.
  • Take on additional duties – Lab Safety Officer, Rep. to Safety Council.
  • Formulate additional procedures as necessary – determining the difference between new procedure vs. amendment.
  • Prepare reports – presentations or written documents – for internal purposes.
  • Assist in formulating test plans for projects.
  • Complete new procedures for laboratory experiments and analysis.
  • Formulate/Create test plans for projects once goals are provided.
  • Prepare reports – presentations or written documents – for external purposes.
  • Be able work independently with other departments/groups and maintain good working relationship.
  • Formulate project goals based on external/customer requests or general R&D direction for future areas of business.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

  • Masters of Science in chemistry, chemical engineering or related discipline such as biology or physics. Ph.D in Chemistry or related discipline preferred.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience in an industrial or academic setting (preferred).
  • Proficiency with moderately complex analysis software including statistical analysis using JMP,
  • Working knowledge of computers and MS Office software.
  • Working knowledge of arithmetic and grammar.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
  • Understand scientific method and demonstrated ability to apply method to achieve defined business objectives.
  • Understand statistical analysis including analysis of variance, error analysis, tolerance stack-ups, etc.
  • Expertise in one of more analytical methods (e.g., NMR, HPLC, GPC, TGA, DSC, etc. refer to individual goals and objectives to establish agreed upon specific areas of focus).
  • Follow written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously in order to meet established deadlines.
  • Work as a team and/or independently.
  • Perform tasks with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
