We are seeking an Engineering Manager, Metallurgy Lab to join our Engineering and R&D Lab Team located in our Headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

What we’re looking for:

  • An experienced engineering manager who has proven ability to implement policies, operational standards, quality systems for Metallurgy, and who can develop and implement equipment, test standards, and manuals.
  • Established experience coordinating and prioritizing employee’s work, and who suggests and implements major lab process improvement opportunities as well as Capital improvements.
  • A leader in assuring compliance of laboratory facilities with relevant safety standards who keeps current with technology and business issues (reviews reports, budgets, trade publications, company memos, etc.).
  • Experience managing personnel, evaluating performance, ability to make sound hiring decisions, and ensures department works within budget and forecast expenses accurately.
  • Intune leader who accurately assess strengths and developmental needs of Metallurgy personnel; gives specific feedback, helpful coaching, provides challenging assignments and opportunities for career development.
  • A metallurgical engineering professional who can plan and conduct research, perform analysis and develop solutions for complex metallurgically-based or surface treatment manufacturing processes.
  • Willingness to provide support on process-related metallurgical issues, including material specification deviations, failure analyses, and process inefficiencies/anomalies; offer corrective actions based on the assessed deviations.
  • Ability to define and document project requirements, project schedules, resource and cost estimates, plans, and targets while staying on time with project schedule and deadlines.
  • A proactive innovator who creates an atmosphere in which timely and high-quality information flows smoothly between oneself and others and encourages open expression of ideas and opinions.
  • A strong communicator who is able to articulate and use data in formal and informal documentation, and advocates for best practices on new and existing processes.

What you’ll do:

The Engineering Manager, Metallurgy Lab is responsible for a global shared service lab. The primary responsibilities include Lab management, which includes providing direction and leadership for the Metallurgy team. This includes resource planning (equipment & people for product testing for internal customers), documentation of operational standards and assuring adequate reporting and documentation of testing is completed. The role also included working on projects that support Blount’s shared vision and goals when metallurgical support is required.


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering or an equivalent discipline is required.
  • 7+ years of metallurgical engineering experience, including a strong background in materials manufacturing, material specifications and application, and manufacturing technology related to heat treat, chemistry, surface finishing, and test and measurement technology.
  • 4+ years of technical management experience, preferably in a lab setting.
  • Established understanding of metallographic preparation and mechanical testing methods.
  • Experience with products and applications in the outdoor power tool, lawn & garden market is preferrable.
  • Proficiency in searching of industry standards (ASTM, ISO, DIN, JIS).
  • Demonstrated skills in continuous learning, adaptability, customer focus, and quality commitment.
