At the Liberty Theatre, we believe that the arts not only benefit our community culturally and economically but are vital to our overall well-being and quality of life.

As a vital community partner and historic theatre, our mission is to be a regional gathering place offering a variety of performing arts experiences and educational programs.

During this time of pandemic and beyond, the Liberty Theatre is committed to harnessing the performing arts’ power as a catalyst for creating a healthier, stronger, and more vibrant community.

Under the Board of Directors’ guidance, the ED is responsible for overseeing this mission’s fulfillment.

The ED reports to the Board of Directors and manages all other staff of LRI.


Shared Executive Leadership: With the Board, update, maintain, and execute LRI’s strategic plan with a personal emphasis on fundraising, finance, organizational structure, and operations—in support of the Liberty mission and vision.

Fundraising: Plan and manage all development and fundraising and membership programs, including developing plans to meet financial development goals.

Finance Management: Manage the creation of annual operating and capital budgets and financial reporting systems.

Meet regularly with the Treasurer and financial professionals; provide accurate and timely financial reports to the Board.

External Relations: Serve as a key representative of LRI in the community and with external agencies, including cultivation of donors, funding institutions, and government agencies.

People Management: Manage, coach, and supervise all current employees.

Ensure compliance with applicable law and employment best practices.

Board Relations: Support the development and effective operations of the Board of Directors.

Communicate with the Board (and Board committees as needed) and provide the requested information to ensure progress is made on all identified goals and tasks.

Theater Operations: Oversee stage rentals, Liberty Presents performances, and other theater rentals.

Program Development and Delivery: Curate a season that meets the LRI mission of presenting quality productions by local artists/performers and outside presenters within the economic reach of a broad spectrum of the community.

Reach audiences of all ages while providing a balance of artistically rich and diverse discipline events, including educational programs.

Develop marketing plans to support audience development and engagement.

Facility Management & Historic Preservation: Work with the LRI Technical Director to maintain and repair the historic Liberty Theatre complex.

Manage (directly or indirectly) nine commercial tenant rentals within the complex.


Exemplary communication skills, including public speaking and written communication.

Exemplary interpersonal skills for team building with staff and Board members.

Ability and demonstrated experience in implementing effective visionary leadership within an organization with integrity, stakeholder involvement, community collaboration, and accountability.

Commitment and demonstrated experience in working with all community stakeholders to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion through programming.

Advanced degree in arts, nonprofit management, or other related fields of study or commensurate experience.

Demonstrated experience leading a department, program, or organization through growth and transition, resulting in a unified team, improved systems, and the ability to serve the community better.

Experience managing a racially and culturally diverse staff and volunteer pool, creating an environment where space is made for multiple perspectives.

Demonstrated experience managing a large and/or historic facility alongside/leading consultants and contractors.

Comfortable using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, donor management software, and ticketing systems.

Ability to climb stairs or ladders; should possess the ability to push, pull, and lift to 50lbs unassisted.

Exemplary diplomacy and patience, along with a sense of humor.


Leadership and Team Management

Demonstrated inclusive leadership experience (seeking out and considering different views and perspectives) with an awareness of your own biases for better decision-making precedents.

A commitment to encouraging learning among staff and Board, advocating for the time and resources necessary for meaningful personal and professional growth related to the Theatre’s mission.

Experience facilitating meetings that foster communication to achieve program and organizational goals and outcomes.

Ability to collaboratively lead the organization through change as needed to serve our community better.

Demonstrated ability to lead to consensus or make decisions in the absence of consensus, considering various perspectives, opinions, and pathways and communicating the potential impact of those decisions.

Organizational Strategy

Experience creating an inclusive process to continually update Liberty’s strategic plan, mission, vision, and values.

Provide leadership to the Board and staff in translating strategic planning priorities into work plans and act as the conduit for Board and staff.

Commitment to working closely with the Board President, staff, and committee chairs to foster productive and strategic Board meetings.

Financial Planning and Management

Demonstrated experience managing complex organizational, program, or department budgets.

Ability to prepare and monitor the annual organizational budget, forecasting variances in expenses and revenue, and course-correcting as necessary, with the board treasurer and accounting team’s support.

Experience with nonprofit financial management or the ability and commitment to quickly learn nonprofit accounting best practices.

Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining mutually supportive relationships with partner organizations (i.e., businesses, schools, government organizations, and funders).

Ability to participate in and effectively represent Liberty Theatre at local, regional, and national events and forums.

Commitment to seek out and maintain collaborative relationships with Clatsop County’s public schools and their staff.

Ability to promote the needs and interests of Astoria and Clatsop County to leaders and elected officials.

Ability to attend frequent community events, fundraisers, and shows.

Program Evaluation and Outcomes

Understanding of programming trends in regional and national venue markets.

A Demonstrated action-oriented, entrepreneurial approach to developing innovative, funded programs that are discipline and culturally diverse.

Successful record of setting a vision for, managing, and implementing strategies that scale programs, initiatives, or organizations to a new growth phase.

Ability to provide leadership to Educational Outreach volunteers in developing evaluation and growth models for workshops and programs.

Demonstrated experience and comfort with acting as the face of an organization, large team, or program.

The Executive Director will accompany members of the Board and Fundraising Committee to key meetings with funders to secure the resources necessary to achieve Liberty’s mission.

Demonstrated experience in fundraising and working alongside consultants and stakeholders.
